Benefits of Moving to a Condo or Senior Home
Choosing to move out of your house, especially one you’ve lived in for decades, can be a tough decision. There are so many memories in your home, from Christmases to summer barbecues to birthday parties; it can be even tougher if this is the home where your children were raised.
For seniors, however, there are some important benefits to moving into a condo or a senior home. While every individual needs to make a personal, inward choice, having the right information can help you make a confident decision.
Benefits of Moving to a Condo or Senior Home
Fewer Chores, No Yard Work
Many seniors, even the healthiest and most active, struggle with household chores that have been basic tasks their entire lives. As we age, many of these daily tasks are left undone. With a condo or a senior home, however, residents are not responsible for mowing, clearing sidewalks, raking leaves, and all the little chores that are a part of home ownership.
Greater Opportunities for Socializing
The chances of social isolation increase as we get older. We’re retired, many of our friends have moved or passed, and we can’t participate in many of the group activities we used to enjoy, such as bowling or golf. Unfortunately, isolation is not just a cause of boredom, it can actually lead to mental and physical problems.
A study published in the Annals of Family Medicine reported that social visits can actually decrease depression and improve the quality of life in seniors. Another study from the University of Montreal found that seniors who eat with a group often have better nutritional intake.
What does this have to do with moving to condos and senior homes? In these living facilities, as opposed to living alone in a house, a person is more likely to interact with people on a regular basis, reducing the likelihood of social isolation.
Amenities are Never Far
Many condo complexes, and even some senior homes, have multiple amenities that allow you to enjoy your favorite activities without having to leave the facility. This can be especially beneficial for seniors who struggle with driving or can’t walk long distances.
While the specific amenities will vary, many facilities have tennis courts, a swimming pool, a gym, billiard tables, entertainment centers, and lounge areas. Some, especially senior homes, offer community events, such as organized card tournaments or fitness classes.
Bills are (Usually) More Predictable and Manageable
Many condos and senior homes offer a flat-rate living expense, making budgeting and billing easier for seniors who may be on a limited income. For example, if you are living in a home that is heated with a gas furnace, you’ll likely deal with the fluctuating cost of gas. But after moving to a condo or senior home, you often pay a flat monthly rate.
Also, most of these facilities have cable, internet, phone, and other bills wrapped up in their monthly rate, further simplifying payments.
Monitoring Care and Health
While this generally applies only to senior homes, having someone to monitor your health and assist with care services can be a major benefit to living in one of these facilities. Many senior homes and senior apartments have on-site nurses who can offer emergency service, medication assistance, and more.
